Speed limit signs are traffic management facilities that use different colors and numbers to provide drivers with accurate and timely information and guidance to promote smooth traffic flow and driving safety. Their purpose is to ensure road traffic safety and guide vehicles to travel smoothly.

Maximum speed limit signs are white with a red circle, and black numbers indicate the maximum speed allowed on that section of road. Minimum speed limit signs are blue with a white circle, and white numbers indicate the minimum speed allowed on that section of road; often, there is a bowl-shaped white pattern below the numbers. End-of-speed-limit signs are white with a black circle, and multiple diagonal lines above the black numbers indicate that the speed limit has been lifted. Suggested speed signs remind drivers to drive at the recommended speed; they are usually yellow with black lettering and a black border, and are often used in conjunction with warning signs or supplementary signs. Road surface speed limit markings are markings painted on the road surface; yellow numbers indicate the maximum speed, and white numbers indicate the minimum speed, which can be identified by the "yellow high, white low" rule.

According to the "Road Traffic Safety Law of the People's Republic of China," motor vehicles shall not exceed the maximum speed limit indicated by speed limit signs when driving on roads; when setting speed limit signs, factors such as road function, technical grade, roadside development level, route geometry, operating speed, traffic conditions, traffic accidents, and the environment should be comprehensively considered.
