Traffic signal poles are mainly made of three materials: steel, cast aluminum, and fiberglass. Steel (high strength, low cost, and excellent rust resistance after hot-dip galvanizing) is an economical and practical choice, suitable for general applications. Cast aluminum (30%-40% lighter, excellent corrosion resistance) is suitable for high-end needs, but is more expensive. Fiberglass (excellent insulation, corrosion resistance, and aesthetically pleasing) is mostly used in urban landscaping, and is also relatively expensive. When choosing a material, budget, environmental adaptability (cast aluminum is preferred in coastal areas with high salt spray), and aesthetic requirements should be considered comprehensively.

Plastic is one of the most common materials used in traffic lights. Plastic traffic lights are inexpensive, lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and have good high and low temperature resistance. However, plastic also has some drawbacks; its strength and hardness cannot compare to metal, it is susceptible to ultraviolet radiation and chemicals, and its lifespan is relatively short.

Metal Materials

Metal materials are made from cast aluminum, cast steel, and other materials. Their advantages include high durability, strong impact resistance, precision machining, and excellent stability, making them less susceptible to environmental influences. However, metal materials also have some drawbacks, such as susceptibility to rust and heavy weight.

Composite Materials

Composite materials are made by combining multiple base materials. This type of material has advantages such as lightweight, high strength, and a low coefficient of thermal expansion. Composite material traffic lights have good corrosion resistance and long lifespan, but are more expensive.

Glass Materials

Glass is one of the commonly used materials for traffic lights. Its advantages include a smooth surface, good light transmission, and resistance to deformation and fading. However, glass is also fragile and relatively expensive.

LED Material

LED traffic lights are currently a popular material choice. LED traffic lights offer advantages such as energy saving, long lifespan, small footprint, and good visual appeal. However, if the LEDs are of poor quality, issues such as gradual brightness decay or flickering may occur.

In conclusion, the selection of traffic light materials should be based on a comprehensive consideration of actual usage, maintenance costs, safety performance, and material management to choose the most suitable material, thereby improving the safety and reliability of traffic facilities.
